Korea’s mountains turn red and gold in autumn. The colors start on the highest peaks and move downhill over several weeks, so the best time depends on where you go.
Where to go
- Seoraksan (Gangwon-do) – the colors usually begin on the peaks around late September to early October and are at their best in mid to late October. Cable cars and valley trails make it easy to enjoy even without a long hike.
- Naejangsan (Jeongeup, Jeolla-do) – famous for its maple-lined path; the best colors usually come in late October to early November.
Tips
- Weekends in peak season are extremely crowded. Go early on a weekday if you can.
- Wear layers; mornings in the mountains are cold.
- Colors shift with the weather each year – check the forecast shortly before your trip.
