Korean Convenience Store Food Guide: 10 Things Worth Trying

Korean convenience stores are not just for emergencies. They are open around the clock, sell fresh and hot food, and are a favorite stop for locals and visitors alike. CU, GS25, 7-Eleven and Emart24 are on almost every block.

Here are 10 things worth trying, plus a few tricks to make shopping easier.

10 things to try

  1. Triangle kimbap (삼각김밥). Rice wrapped in seaweed with fillings such as tuna mayo or spicy pork. The wrapper keeps the seaweed crisp: pull the tab at the top, then the two sides.
  2. Cup ramen and instant ramen. Many stores have a hot water dispenser and a small eating counter, so you can cook and eat right there.
  3. Tteokbokki cups. Spicy rice cakes in a microwavable cup.
  4. Dosirak (도시락). Boxed lunches with rice, side dishes and a main. Ask the staff to heat it up.
  5. Banana milk. A pale yellow bottle of banana-flavored milk is a Korean classic.
  6. Hot snacks near the register. Fried chicken, sausages and hot dogs are often sold warm, ready to grab.
  7. Sandwiches and gimbap rolls. Fresh deliveries arrive daily, and they make a quick breakfast.
  8. Ice cream bars. Korean ice creams like melon-flavored bars are popular, even in winter.
  9. Drinks. Try barley tea (boricha), yogurt drinks and canned coffee, which are all easy to find.
  10. Limited-edition items. Chains launch new and collaboration products all the time. Look for the shelf with “NEW” tags.

Useful phrases

  • “Dewo juseyo” (데워 주세요): “Please heat it up.”
  • “Bongtu juseyo” (봉투 주세요): “A bag, please.” Bags usually cost a small fee.
  • “Kadeuro halgeyo” (카드로 할게요): “I’ll pay by card.”

Tips

  • Microwaves are self-service. There is usually a microwave by the counter, so you can heat items yourself. Follow the instructions on the label.
  • Tourist-friendly. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and stores are open 24 hours in most cities.
  • Alcohol and age. Alcohol is sold, and staff may ask for ID. Carry your passport or a copy if you look young.
  • Compare chains. Each chain has its own exclusive products, so try one from each for variety.
