Suneung Day 2026: Why Korea Goes Silent for One Exam (Nov 19)

Once a year, a whole country goes quiet for a single test. On Thursday, November 19, 2026, around 550,000 students sit the Suneung (수능), Korea’s national college entrance exam, and everyday life bends around them. Flights are rescheduled, offices open later and the streets near exam sites go hushed.

If you’ll be in Korea that week, or you’re just wondering why planes wait for an exam, here is what to expect.

Last updated: October 20, 2026. Exact arrangements are announced close to the exam day, so check the latest news before you travel.

What is the Suneung?

The Suneung, officially the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), is held once a year and run by the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation. Its results play a major role in university admission, which is why it carries so much weight for students and their families.

The test takes most of the day and covers several subjects, including an English listening section.

What changes on exam day

  • Later work start. The government has announced a 10 a.m. start for the workday, and many offices and banks follow.
  • Flights are rescheduled. During the English listening section (reported at about 1:10 to 1:35 p.m. this year), take-offs and landings are rescheduled so aircraft noise doesn’t disturb students. Military drills are paused too.
  • Extra help getting to school. Public transport is usually boosted in the morning, and police often give rides to students who are running late.
  • Quiet zones. Around exam sites, honking and noisy work are discouraged for the day.
  • Cheering crowds. Younger students gather at school gates early in the morning to cheer on the seniors, and many parents pray at temples and churches.

Food and good-luck traditions

You’ll see two classic gifts: yeot (엿, hard taffy) and chapssal-tteok (찹쌀떡, sticky rice cakes). Their stickiness symbolizes “sticking” to the right answers or to a university.

People also traditionally avoid slippery foods such as seaweed soup (miyeok-guk) on exam day, because “slipping” suggests failing.

Tips for visitors

  • If you’re flying around lunchtime on November 19, check your flight time with the airline and leave extra time.
  • Expect heavier traffic and crowded subways in the early morning near schools.
  • Keep your voice down near exam sites, and don’t honk.
  • If you see a nervous student or parent, a quiet smile is appreciated more than a chat.

Why does one exam matter so much?

For many families, the result strongly shapes which university a student can enter, and that is linked to career prospects. That is why the whole society tries to help on the day, and also why the exam is part of an ongoing debate about pressure and student well-being.
